Micro Prong collars were designed originally to fit small dogs, because the larger prongs on standard size collars were too far apart, causing both fit and effectiveness issues. A Micro collar is made up of miniature prongs with a much shorter distance between them than typical prong collars. The end result is a collar that is proportionally correct on a diminutive dog. A Micro stays up under the jaw and on the safe part of the neck where it should be, without slipping down. And it provides gentle, steady pressure when pulled against, eliminating the uneven, pointy feel of too few prongs on a small neck.
In addition to working brilliantly for small dogs, many canine enthusiasts and trainers have discovered the benefits of using a Micro collar with their medium and large size dogs as well. Micros are especially good for larger dogs with short, sleek coats, as standard sized collars tend to slip down on slippery fur. The Micro stays in place better on these dogs and, when links are added, the increased number of prongs provides a more even, custom fit.
A training collar is just no good unless it fits right and works right. All three of our Micro collar styles are specifically designed to custom fit different breeds, ages, and sizes of dogs. Which one is right for your dog? Here's a brief overview:
Dogs 6-20 lbs.
This collar is our light-weight, all around Micro, and fits a large variety of small to medium sized breeds. Designed for dogs between 6 and 20 pounds, it features a swivel leash attachment that is strong, yet lightweight. The Original Micro is our most popular collar, and best suited for most dogs. Add-on links may be purchased for dogs whose neck size exceeds 9" (see our Fitting Chart.) Examples of the size and strength of breeds who do well in Original Micros are Shiba Inus, Havanese, Whippets, Westies, Schnauzers, Springer Spaniels, Norwich Terriers, and Australian Shepherds, to name just a few.
Dogs under 6 lbs.
This collar is our tiniest, most delicate Micro. Designed for dogs who weigh less than 6 pounds, it has the same number of links but features more petite components than either the Original Micro or the Duro Micro. Both the leash attaching swivel and chain are jewelry-grade and tiny in size, which reduces the weight of the collar and slippage on tiny necks. Examples of breeds who do well in Ultra Micros are Toy Fox Terriers, Chihuahuas, Japanese Chin, Brussels Griffon, Italian Greyhounds, Maltese, Miniature Pinschers, and Pomeranians, to name a few.
Dogs 20 lbs. and larger
This collar is our sturdiest Micro, and features our most durable components. Designed for dogs 20 pounds and larger, it can withstand heavier pulling than the other two styles. The biggest difference is that it features a split ring leash attachment, which is stronger than the swivel on the Original Micro style. Add-on links may be purchased for dogs whose neck size exceeds 9" (see our Fitting Chart.) Examples of breeds who do well in Duros are Beagles, Dobermans, French Bulldogs, Dalmations, Boxers, Cairn Terriers, Basset Hounds, Airedales, Australian Cattle Dogs, Staffordshire Terriers and Weimeraners, to name just a few.
